Learn Our Story

John and Sarah Darcus did not have an opportunity for higher education but gained knowledge through reading, hard work, association, and experience. They believed in education and encouraged all who would listen to attain higher education. John and Sarah helped family and friends with tuition, funds to purchase textbooks, fed and brought clothes for students, and other items needed. They both were steadfast in their belief in becoming the best they can through education and sharing what they learned. The Second Chance Scholarship to be awarded through the Foundation will be consistent with the Foundation’s mission, goals, and values, granted through an application process annually and according to funding availability.

John married Sarah M. Bolden on October 9, 1934, and they were married for 57 years and had five children and raised two of their nieces as their own, and often extended family found their way into the Darcus household. John and Sarah loved their church where their faith was very central in their lives. John was a coal miner and enjoyed the outdoors, farming, hunting, and fishing and Sarah worked, raised their household, oversaw the kitchen at their church, and helped with their farm. Sarah Bolden Darcus was the daughter of Alfonzo and Ellen Mosley Bolden, and was deeply influenced by her parent’s strong family bond and the importance of community was etched in her at an early age led Sarah to have an open heart and open door at the Darcus home.

John supported his family as a coal miner and was selected by John L. Lewis, an American leader of organized labor and served as president of the United Mine Workers of America (U.M.W.A.). John L. Lewis was a driving force behind the founding of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) and took the union into the American Federation of Labor (AFL). As president of the U.M.W.A., John L. Lewis asked John Darcus, a man respected by coal miners, its leaders, and appointed him to the Weights and Scales Committee responsible for having accurate scales to weigh mined coal products so workers could be paid fairly. John Darcus also fought to sustain the unions collective bargaining rights, health and retirement benefits and the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, which provided compensation for miners suffering from Black Lung Disease. While working with U.M.W.A., District 31, Local 1949, John Darcus was a board member for 11 years before becoming Vice President of District 31, but resigned to become Secretary-Treasurer, which he held that position until his retirement on June 20, 1989, after 58 years of service to the union and coal miners.
